UPDATE 11 January 2021: This card, and the company behind it, seems to be missing in action (MIA). When trying to access their website (bitcoinblackcard.com), you are just met with an error message.

A common argument for regular money (also known as fiat currency) as opposed to cryptocurrency is that you can’t use cryptocurrency to buy groceries and other everyday items. Well, through the use of a cryptocurrency debit card, you can. This is a review of Bitcoin Black Card, one of the crypto debit cards out there.

Bitcoin Black Card only supports the biggest crypto of them all: Bitcoin.

With respect to fiat currencies, however, the card supports a diverse group of fiat currencies: EUR, USD, CAD, ZAR, GBP, AUD, NZD, INR, AED, CNY.

This card is actually not one card. Rather, it is a collection of prepaid debit cards possible to deposit Bitcoin into.

The cards (or the collection of cards more exactly) are MasterCards and VISAs, so you can spend the funds on your card (or cards) wherever you can purchase with MasterCard or VISA.

US-investors may not use this card. So if you’re from the US and you’re looking for a crypto debit card, please refer to our Crypto Debit Card List to find one for you.

Athena Bitcoin, Inc. is the company behind the Bitcoin Black Card operations.

This card’s primary objective seems to be anonymous payments.

We think that this card’s fees are relatively moderate, but not very competitive.

The above is because there is only one fee – the issuance fee. The issuance fee is 0.06 BTC. This fee is extremely high compared to other cryptocurrency debit cards where the fee is usually around USD 15.00. 0.06 BTC on the date of last updating this review (19 December 2019) is USD 430.

On the flip side, there is no monthly fee, no ATM fee, and no commission based spending fee. You should carefully consider whether the absence of other fees outweighs the substantially higher issuance fee.

With respect to this card, we have had great difficulties obtaining the relevant information we have obtained for other cryptocurrency debit cards. This is of course a risk for any potential user of this card. We strongly urge anyone interested in getting this card to form their own opinion on Bitcoin Black Card’s offering.

If this is the crypto debit card for you, congrats! If not, check out one of the other cards in our crypto debit card list. Good luck!
