HODL Card Review
A common argument for regular money (also known as fiat currency) as opposed to cryptocurrency is that you can’t use cryptocurrency to buy groceries and other everyday items. Well, through the use of a crypto debit card, you can. This is a review of HODL Card, one of the crypto debit cards out there
General information
HODL Card is an interesting new card issued by Club Swan.
The HODL Card is intended to be used by both new crypto investors, familiar investors, crypto adopters and globetrotters. The card has attractive functionality for each and every one of these groups.
MasterCard
HODL Card is on the MasterCard-network, meaning that you can use the card at any point of payment that accepts MasterCard. This is of course a great advantage, seeing that MasterCard is the most widely accepted card in the world (alongside VISA).
Picture of Card
There are three different versions of the HODL Card: Foil Design, Forged Aluminium and Gold Plated (with Diamonds). The Foil Design is the standard version and the Gold Plated card is the most luxurious one.
Supported Cryptos
The card currently has support for the following assets/transfers:
- BTC
- ETH
- BCH
- LTC
- EOS
- USDT ERC20
- USDT OMNI
- USDT TRC 20
- USDC
- BAT
- PAX
Please note though that no card holder is required to hold tokens or buy coins.
Friendly and Easy Referral Program
HODL Card also has a referral program, with a CPA-payout. When you refer a friend to the HODL Card, you as a referrer will get USD 30 as a sign-up reward. Great stuff!
Restricted Jurisdictions
The company behind the HODL Card is currently focused on the distribution of cards in the EU market. If you are not a resident of the European Union and EEA countries, you can still use other HODL products (such as their wallet).
For any non-EU people interested in getting a crypto card, we recommend you to use our Debit Card List to find another crypto card for you.
HODL Card Cashback
What is a cashback feature? Well, it's actually quite simple, every time you use the card, a percentage of what you pay with the card gets transferred back to you, normally in the form of tokens.
With HODL Card, the percentage is from 2.00% all the way up to 22.00%, depending upon what purchase you have made. We have not been able to find any further details on exactly how this instant cashback feature works, but we are working on it.
HODL Card Fees & Limits
HODL Card’s fees are fairly competitive. Overall, they are slightly less than Crypto.com's corresponding offering and slightly higher than Revolut's. The fees do however vary dependent upon which card you have.
Issuance Fees
There is an issuance fee for all versions of the card. It varies between the versions as follows:
Plastic Card Issuance Fee: USD 99.99
Metal Card Issuance Fee: USD 249.99
Gold Plated Card Issuance Fee: USD 5,000 (yikes!)
Monthly Fees
There is also a monthly fee for all versions of the card. It also varies between the versions as set out below. This fee is charged within 24-48 hours from when the card has been activated on the website. Any following monthly fee charges will be made on the same day each month.
Plastic Card Monthly Fee: USD 9.99
Metal Card Monthly Fee: USD 13.99
Gold Plated Card Monthly Fee: USD 29.99
Spend Fees and ATM Fees
The most important fee of them all is the commission on spending. As far as we understand it, HODL Card charges USD 0.20 per transaction (regardless of the amount). This fee is the same across all versions of the card.
Finally, the HODL Card charges 2.00% in ATM-fees, regardless of which fiat currency you withdraw from the relevant ATM. You can withdraw up to USD 1,500 daily.
