IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please be advised that this card is currently only open to citizens and permanent residents of Australia and the United Kingdom. We will update this review as soon as that changes.

A common argument for regular money (also known as fiat currency), as opposed to cryptocurrency, is that you can’t use cryptocurrency to buy groceries and other everyday items. Well, through the use of a cryptocurrency debit card, you can. This is a review of CoinJar Card, one of the crypto debit cards out there.

CoinJar Card supports more than 29 different cryptos and will most likely support even more cryptos in the future. With respect to fiat currencies, CoinJar Card supports AUD.

The CoinJar company states that this card “seamlessly connects to the CoinJar companion app available on iOS, Android, and web”.

According to information on CoinJar Card's website, it is fairly easy to get the card (provided that you are an Australian). First, you create a CoinJar account and verify your identity and mobile number under the Card tab on the app. The next step is to accept the Product Disclosure Statement and confirm. This option is not available on the web and you will need to use version 2.4.0 or above of the mobile app for ordering the card.

CoinJar is equipped with full digital wallet support. So, users can effortlessly spend cryptos through any device, including compatible smartwatches. While spending, the user has to select the crypto which will then be automatically converted using CoinJar's best rates.

Additionally, the card can be used wherever EFTPOS terminals (see below under EFTPOS) are available in Australia.

Starting on 1 October 2021, physical cards can also be ordered. No extra charge will be levied for physical cards.

This card is an EFTPOS-card. EFTPOS stands for Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale and denotes an electronic payment system. It comes from USA and initially rolled out in 1982. See more about EFTPOS here. EFTPOS-cards can be used essentially everywhere and doesn’t limit the card holder in any substantial manner compared to holding a Visa-card or MasterCard.

US-investors may not use this card, as the card is only open to citizens and permanent residents of Australia and the United Kingdom.

We think that CoinJar Card charges competitive fees.

There is no monthly fee at all. This is a competitive edge for this card.

There is an issuance fee set to USD 29, which is a bit above the industry average.

ATM usage results in a fixed fee of USD 2.00, per withdrawal. This is not a high fee, even if there are cards not charging any ATM-withdrawal fees at all.

Furthermore, the most important fee of them all, the commission on spending. CoinJar Card sets you back 1.00%. This means that if you buy a nice sweater for USD 100, this will reduce your crypto assets by USD 101. 1.00% is not in any way above the industry average.

Finally, the maximum deposit is USD 999 (and the minimum deposit is USD 29). You can never have a higher balance on the card than USD 999. If you need a card with higher maximum deposit limits than that, don’t worry. Just have a look in our crypto debit card list to find another card for you.

CoinJar Limits

The card from CoinJar also offers something very interesting: a rewards feature. Its actually a loyalty program that rewards members by way of points. A member accrues 100 CoinJar reward points for every 1 AUD paid in transaction fees. CoinJar Reward Points are only spendable in the CoinJar Rewards Store or used for covering costs associated with future trades. We have to see what they are worth there to establish the value of CoinJar's reward program. For instance, you can buy a AUD 25 gift card on Uber, for 2,500 CoinJar Reward Points. This makes each CoinJar Reward Point worth roughly AUD 0.01 and each fixed reward point worth roughly AUD 0.01. Out of all the cards in the industry we have reviewed that have cashback functions, this is the absolutely lowest cashback-level that we have come across. But hey, it's better than nothing!
