UPDATE 18 September 2024: When trying to access the website of Zaif today, we were unsuccessful. As far as we know, there have been no preceding messages on system maintenance or new websites or anything similar.

Accordingly, we believe that this exchange has closed down and we have marked it as "dead" in our Exchange Graveyard. If the exchange's website would become accessible again and the error is just temporary, we will "revive" it and bring it back to our Exchange List.

Zaif is a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange. It has been active since 2015.

Zaif does not explicitly state that US-investors are prohibited from trading. Accordingly, we do believe that US-investors can trade here. Any US-investors interested in trading here should in any event form their own opinion on any issues arising from their citizenship or residency.

Zaif Beautiful Picture

Different exchanges have different trading views. And there is no “this overview is the best”-view. You should yourself determine which trading view that suits you the best. What the views normally have in common is that they all show the order book or at least part of the order book, a price chart of the chosen cryptocurrency and order history. They normally also have buy and sell-boxes. Before you choose an exchange, try to have a look at the trading view so that you can ascertain that it feels right to you. The below is a picture of the trading view at Zaif:

Every trade occurs between two parties: the maker, whose order exists on the order book prior to the trade. The maker thus “makes” the order being executed. The other party is the taker, who places the order that matches (or “takes”) the maker’s order. The maker-taker model normally encourages market liquidity by rewarding the makers of that liquidity with a fee discount.

Zaif’s trading fees for takers are 0.10%. This fee is a bit below the global industry average. The global industry average is arguably around 0.25%, although we are currently seeing a shift towards lower fees. Many exchanges now charge e.g. 0.10% or 0.15% instead.

But the taker fees are not even this platform’s strongest edge. At the Zaif-exchange, makers don’t pay any fees at all (0.00%). Naturally, this is a great deal for the makers in the trades at this exchange.

However, Zaif also charges something they call an "account maintenance fee", but only for accounts who haven't completed KYC. Naturally, this is a way to incentivize users to complete the KYC. The account maintenance fee becomes higher, the higher the value of the assets you hold at the exchange is. The following is a table of the account maintenance fees:

Zaif charges a withdrawal fee amounting to 0.0001 when you withdraw BTC (in normal speed). This fee is far below the industry average. You can also increase the speed of the withdrawal by paying a higher fee, all the way up to 0.01 BTC. The deposit and withdrawal fees are further specified in the below picture:

At this exchange, you can deposit through both wire transfer and credit cards. This can be helpful especially for newer crypto investors.
