4 Cities That Are Crypto Hotspots In 2023

Although different countries have varying rules and regulations guiding the use of cryptocurrencies, there are a lot of crypto hotspots around the world in 2023.

TL;DR

  • Several merchants and businesses in these crypto hotspots allow customers to use Bitcoin or other crypto assets to pay for goods and services.

  • Crypto hotspots have vibrant crypto communities, multiple Bitcoin ATMs for easy use, and regulation supporting digital asset growth and adoption.

The regulatory landscape in these cities has made them attractive to the crypto community. Although some countries, like China, have unfavorable crypto laws, several others are open and accommodating. Despite starkly varying regulatory climes in many places, the cities below are popular hotspots for crypto in 2023.

London, England

London is a major crypto hub with over 350 companies operating in the crypto space, including Bitchain Capital and Bittylicious. The city has over 14 Bitcoin ATMs and several merchants accepting Bitcoin payments for goods and services. London also has several meetup groups for members of the crypto community.

Crypto adoption in London is beneficial to the city’s vibrant online gambling community, which contributed considerably to the UK’s £6.9 million gross gaming yield (GGY) recorded in 2021. Players resident in the city can go online to find various casinos that use cryptocurrencies as payments. In addition to letting punters make crypto deposits, these casinos also pay bonuses using digital assets. Some of them even offer 200% deposit bonuses up to 5 BTC.

San Francisco, California

The city of San Francisco was considered a tech hub well before Bitcoin launched in 2009. This reputation helped the city attract the crypto community, including major companies like Coinbase and Kraken, which are headquartered there. Several San Francisco merchants, including stores, bars, and restaurants, accept Bitcoin and crypto payment options.

San Salvador, El Salvador

San Salvador is a crypto-forward city and the capital of El Salvador - the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. There are a few small merchants in San Salvador that allow anyone to pay for coffee or shrimp tacos by scanning a generated QR code and making payment via the Lightning Network.

San Salvador has more than 61 Bitcoin ATMs where residents can buy or sell Bitcoin using cash. Since Bitcoin is legal tender, San Salvador authorities allow residents to pay taxes using the king coin.

Miami, Florida

In August, Miami collaborated with open-source protocol CityCoins to launch its own crypto called “MiamiCoin.” As such, it comes as no surprise that the city is a popular crypto hub and one of the most visited tourist destinations in the US. In addition to dozens of businesses that accept crypto payments, Miami has more than 780 Bitcoin ATMs scattered across the city.

Miami’s position on cryptocurrencies is encouraging as it has hosted one of the largest Bitcoin gatherings in the US - The Miami Bitcoin Conference. The seminar had more than 35,000 attendees in 2022. As part of efforts to promote crypto adoption in Miami, the mayor has pushed for the city to accept Bitcoin tax payments. Estimates suggest the program could generate up to $60 million for the city over the next year.
