The official state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua announced on Wednesday that it will issue a digital media photo collection via non-fungible tokens (NFTs). A boost for blockchain technology in China, after Beijing recently criticized the technology that underpins NFTs and issued an outright ban on cryptocurrencies towards the end of September this year.

The issuance from Xinhua suggests support for the booming NFT industry, with most Chinese metaverse-related stocks rising following the announcement.

The 11 photos issued were all taken by journalists during 2021 and will be accessible free of charge online at 8 p.m. (1200GMT) on December 24, each offering a limited edition of 10,000 copies.
