On Tuesday, the Celo Foundation announced via X that its Self Protocol is now live and available to developers. Self Protocol is an identity primitive leveraging zero-knowledge proofs to enable Sybil-resistant token distributions.
Led by core Celo team members & following the acquisition of OpenPassport, Self Labs began work in early 2024 to ensure apps can scale to millions of users without compromising privacy.
Self Protocol introduces two core components: Self Pass & Self Connect. Self Pass is a verification system for Sybil-resistant token distributions, allowing apps to verify user attributes like age or location with a passport without revealing personal data to third parties. Self Connect transforms familiar phone numbers into wallet addresses, making sending and receiving digital assets as easy as sending a text. By removing the complexity of wallet addresses, Self Connect enables broader onchain adoption.
The protocol supports a wide array of applications for developers, including: Privacy-preserving identity verification for Sybil-resistant token distributions, age and country of origin verification, combatting AI Agents, and DeFi integrations.
Celo is an open platform that supports various distributed applications, smart contract development, and payments using e-mail addresses and phone numbers as public keys. CELO is up 2.5% in the last 24 hours and is currently trading at $0.4002.
