MetaMask to Integrate Native Bitcoin
Ethereum-focused wallet MetaMask is reportedly working on integrating native Bitcoin (BTC), according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter.
The sources added that the exact timeline remains unclear. However, one of them pointed out that access to this feature could arrive in MetaMask within the next month. The other source added that the exact Bitcoin functionality remains undecided while the features could initially be limited and expanded over time.
MetaMask is currently one of the largest Ethereum wallets in the world, with more than 30 million monthly active users.
The Bitcoin ecosystem continues to experience increased functionalities, with the recent addition of FT-like Ordinals and Runes enabling the creation of meme coins on the Bitcoin blockchain.
When asked to comment on this latest development, a MetaMask spokesperson told CoinDesk that,
"We're excited about MetaMask's commitment to embracing the multi-chain world of web3 and continually exploring new integrated features to enhance the usability and security of the leading self-custodial wallet. While we can't confirm any timeline for specific developments at this time, we're always working on innovations to serve our users better. Stay tuned for further updates when we're ready to share more."
Currently, MetaMask leverages an Ethereum-compatible ERC-20 token known as Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) to bridge bitcoin to Ethereum's dApps.
