Leading cryptocurrency venture capital firm Paradigm has called on Ethereum developers to accelerate protocol improvements while maintaining the network's fundamental values of decentralization and neutrality. In a detailed blog post released January 25, the firm emphasized that Ethereum's development pace could be substantially increased without compromising its core principles.
"We think Ethereum's core protocol could be improving much faster," Paradigm stated, highlighting numerous high-impact enhancements that could be implemented without sacrificing the network's essential characteristics.
Breaking from Annual Update Cycle: Ethereum's Development Pace
Ethereum has traditionally maintained a pace of approximately one major protocol update per year, despite having access to extensive technical resources and expertise. Paradigm's proposal emphasizes that discussions about value trade-offs, particularly between decentralization and efficiency, shouldn't impede progress.
The firm advocates for significant improvements, including the integration of native rollups for layer 2 solutions to inherit security from Ethereum's base layer. Notably, this recommendation coincided with layer 2 project leaders agreeing to prioritize similar enhancements.
The venture capital firm also addressed user experience concerns, proposing streamlined wallet infrastructure that eliminates the need for manual private key management. This suggestion aims to improve both accessibility and security for users interacting with the network.
Foundation Leadership Restructures Amid Protocol Evolution
In parallel developments, the Ethereum Foundation announced a significant commitment of 50,000 ETH (approximately $160 million) to support decentralized finance initiatives. This funding allocation aligns with recent organizational changes announced by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, aimed at enhancing developer support and operational transparency.
Buterin's January 18 announcement on X outlined substantial leadership changes at the Ethereum Foundation, emphasizing technical expertise and improved developer collaboration. The restructuring maintains the foundation's commitment to avoiding political involvement while upholding decentralization and privacy principles.
These developments follow a challenging period for the Ethereum ecosystem, including debates over spending practices and the implementation of new conflict-of-interest policies. The policy changes were prompted by foundation researchers accepting advisory roles at EigenLayer Foundation in May 2024.
The network currently supports 55 layer-2 rollups, according to L2Beat, though this growth has sparked discussions about potential revenue impacts on Ethereum's base layer. As the ecosystem evolves, Paradigm's call for accelerated development while preserving core values represents a significant push for balanced innovation in the blockchain space.
