  • The deal is expected to be completed within the first half of 2025.

Robinhood to Acquire Bitstamp

Robinhood is planning to acquire Bitstamp, one of the oldest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, in a deal that could be worth $200 million.

This latest development is part of Robinhood’s efforts to expand its base beyond the United States. Bitstamp is currently the oldest crypto exchange still operational as it was launched in 2011.

The deal is expected to be completed within the first half of 2025. However, it is still subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. Barclays Capital Inc. is the exclusive financial advisor to Robinhood and Galaxy Digital Partners LLC is the the exclusive financial advisor to Bitstamp.

By acquiring Bitstamp, Robinhood will easily expand its operations beyond the United States. Bitstamp currently has over 50 licenses, allowing Robinhood to operate in other regions including the EU, UK, and Asia. The deal would also enable Robinhood to offer services to institutional crypto clients.

While commenting on this latest development, Johann Kerbrat, General Manager of Robinhood Crypto, said,

“The acquisition of Bitstamp is a major step in growing our crypto business. Bitstamp’s highly trusted and long-standing global exchange has shown resilience through market cycles … [and] has established one of the strongest reputations across retail and institutional crypto investors. Through this strategic combination, we are better positioned to expand our footprint outside of the U.S. and welcome institutional customers to Robinhood.”

Bitstamp currently supports over 85 tradable assets and offers staking and lending products. Robinhood believes that the products would enhance its cryptocurrency offering.

B Graftieaux, CEO of Bitstamp commented that,

“As the world’s longest-running cryptocurrency exchange, Bitstamp is known as one of the most trusted and transparent crypto platforms worldwide. Bringing Bitstamp's platform and expertise into Robinhood’s ecosystem will give users an enhanced trading experience with a continuing commitment to compliance, security, and customer-centricity.”

If the acquisition is completed, Bitstamp’s existing team will join forces with Robinhood.
