MLB Champions Marketplace Review
MLB Champions Marketplace is a crypto game and NFT marketplace that launched in August 2018 when game development company Lucid Sight partnered with the MLB to capitalize on the growing sports and NFT space. Fans could download the app and buy, sell, trade and play all in the same spot.
Over the 2020 season there was very little production for these digital collectibles and little activity on the MLB Champions Marketplace's discord channel, leaving many questions unanswered.
In March 2021, it was reported that the MLB and Lucid Sight have discontinued the partnership, leaving the bobblehead-esque baseball crypto figures to be sold on 3rd party marketplaces such as OpenSea. The silver lining to this story is that the NFTs from MLB Champions will long survive the company, an encouraging notion for the future of NFTs as a whole and will add value to these now very limited crypto figures.
What is an NFT Marketplace?
An NFT Marketplace is a marketplace for NFTs. So far so good. But what is an NFT?
NFT is an acronym for “Non-Fungible Tokens”. Something which is fungible is replaceable. For instance, one kilo of 24 karat gold is – at least in theory – replaceable with any other kilo of 24 karat gold. When something is non-fungible, it means that it is unique, and not replaceable with any other item out there.
Although NFTs are conceptually similar to cryptocurrencies, these digital assets might represent antiques & artworks, collectables like trading cards, and other items with unique features. These tokens are stored cryptographically in a blockchain network for authentication and validation. Even when transacting, each token is sold as a whole, unlike cryptocurrencies which are divisible into smaller units. NFTs lose their value when split into smaller portions, however, they can be duplicated by the artist and each additional copy can be sold separately (but the total number of duplicates will then always be known).
MLB Champions Marketplace focus
MLB Champions Marketplace focus on playing and buying. Unlike other NFT marketplaces, it serves as a game to be played much like Fantasy baseball and a marketplace for the actual NFTs. Ideally, users would buy the crypto figures till they filled an entire team roster, to then be an active player and upgrade their figures and value over time.
MLB Champions was actually the first company of it’s kind to partner with a major sports franchise, giving real time correlation between players and their crypto figure counterparts. This in turn adds real statistics to the value of the figures.
Every figure has a unique immutable reference written to Ethereum Blockchain giving the user full ownership. There are 6 different “packs” you can purchase, all with different likelihoods of obtaining seemingly rare or “epic” figures.
Layout of MLB Champions Marketplace
Different NFT Marketplaces present their NFTs, the latest bid and the remaining time of an auction etc. in different ways. What you are most comfortable with viewing and using is up to you and no one else. The following is a print screen of their marketplace:
You gain access to the marketplace as a function of the actual game, enabling you to see all players currently for sale from other users. Additionally you can purchase from the team store when available.
MLB Champions Marketplace Fees
When you buy an NFT somewhere, it is customary for the relevant NFT Marketplace to charge a fee for enabling the sale. This fee is typically a percentage of the NFT's sale price and is normally paid by the buyer. This can be compared with how regular art galleries normally take a share of the sale of any paintings etc. hanging in the gallery when a sale is executed.
No official fees for the MLB Champions Marketplace are reported at this time. We will update this review with the correct information on the fees when (and if) we receive it.
Referral Program
There is no current reported referral program at MLB Champions Marketplace.
MLB Champions Marketplace payment methods
MLB Champions are available to purchase on any app store, however the actual NFTs are Ethereum-dependent.
